A STRONG VOICE

As the largest organization representing registered

nurses and health care professionals in Massachusetts,

MNA is leading the fight to defend our profession for all

Massachusetts registered nurses, union or non-union.

No matter where nurses practice or what the population

of patients they serve, the MNA has the tools, the

resources and the support nurses need to be the best

they can be and to ensure that the patients they care for

receive the care they deserve.

The MNA has set the standard for union contract

language to protect nurses in Massachusetts, including:

• Making MNA nurses the highest paid nurses in

Massachusetts.

• Preventing mandatory overtime.

• Preventing inappropriate floating of nurses and

the use of mandatory on-call.

• Regulating the introduction of new technologies.

• Establishing staffing guidelines and ratios.

• Providing important new benefits such as HIV

insurance and retiree health insurance.

“As an educator and

professional, I believe RNs need

to be represented by a nurses

union - MNA - to provide a

unified voice addressing the

nurse’s work environment

which directly impacts on the

care patients receive.”

MNA ASSOCIATE MEMBERS

The Massachusetts Nurses Association is the largest union

and professional association of registered nurses and health

care professionals in Massachusetts, representing more

then 23,000 members working in 85 health care facilities,

including 51 acute care hospitals, as well as a growing

number of nurses and health care professionals working in

schools, visiting nurses associations, public health

departments and state agencies.

The Massachusetts Nurses Association's purpose is to:

• Foster high standards of nursing practice, education

and research.

• Provide protections for RNs in advocating for safer

staffing and practice conditions.

• Support nurses in gaining a greater voice and

respect on the job.

• Foster involvement by RNs in the political process

to shape sound health policies.

• Promote access to quality health care services for

all people.

Effective July 1, 2008, MNA will offer a new Associate

Member status for registered nurses in New England. This

is an exciting opportunity for registered nurses to engage in

an effective and meaningful way to strengthen the largest

professional organization of working nurses in

Massachusetts.

As an Associate Member, you will have the opportunity to

work with colleagues on health care public policy projects,

and help identify topics for designing continuing education

programs relevant to your practice.

As a full-time ICU nurse for almost 30 years, I have

witnessed the profound changes in the way we care for

our patients and practice nursing. Working as RNs in

the hospital environment has become increasingly

challenging and affects not only our work lives, but also

our lives outside of the workplace
